A great historical account of a dark page in world history, easy to read and informative, it sheds light on a little seen part of history, definitely worth a look. Having written his graveyxrd three books while still with John Brown Publishing, Dash has been a full-time writer since His original plot to mutiny and seize the ship had been made before the wreck, but the Batavia had sunk before Cornelisz could put his plan into action. I thought the story of the wreck of the Essex was bad batzvia this takes the cake. To his credit, the captain managed to get all of the civilians traveling on the ship off of the ship and onto the island; there were in all about survivors. It was at this point that rescue appeared on the horizon.
In harrowing detail based on survivors’ accounts, the author desribes the barbarous and methodical slaughter of the stranded community as Cornelisz and his band decimate numbers to improve the possibility of their own survival. There’s no point telling what the book is about, because the whole thing is too unlikely. Search What are you looking for? The potent mix of many men and few women without the firm hand of control then lead to a very ugly incident. Dash’s sociology of the paranormal Borderlands and of obsession in Holland Tulipomania prepared him nicely for this telling of a 17th-century ship loaded with Dutchmen, treasure and fanaticism. The mutiny might have succeeded, but in the dark morning hours of June 3,the Batavia smashed through a coral reef and ran aground on a small chain of islands near Australia. Very thorough account of the disaster and unbelievable events that followed.
Not only history, but an enthralling sea yarn and true-crime thriller. We are experiencing technical difficulties. Baatavia remaining number was made up of about a hundred soldiers and, by far the smallest group, civilian passengers who were going, or returning to the Indies. This was to sow the seeds of disaster. Those who seized control killed people for the smallest infractions. The other issue with this book is just the disturbing nature of the subject matter I had been completely unaware of this episode of history.
