Dio Chrysostom’s and Lucian’s expropriation of Cynic figures are heavily utilized, as elsewhere in the wliliam. Also, there were charges of hypocrisy. Some nice insights as to how the ideas and practices of the Cynics related to both their times and ours. A good dose of Cynic minimalism applied to the presentation would have made the book more effective as an introductory text. But that was the intent.
Many of the gaps are plugged in the ‘further reading’; see also now L. A life according to nature “kata physis” in Greek is a fundamental aspect of Cyinsm. Such evasions frustrate scholarly progress.
