Sep 17, Fran rumciman it really liked it. North American readers would certainly be wiser to read Tyerman before Runciman. Runciman is also highly critical of the Crusaders for a consistent pattern of atrocities towards civilians throughout the entire era.
You gain a better understanding of the establishment of the Kingdom, it’s princes petty jealousies and Islam’s ultimate triumph over “The Kingdom of Jerusalem” is a far better read than Vol. A History of the Crusades, Vol. Ce mention to the ladies urnciman Outremer such as Eschiva of Tripoli who lead the defence of forts when their men were out fighting.

I liked the fact that he got into a lot of the details about the political happenings in the arab world during the period. Sir Steven Runciman’s three volume A History of the Crusades, one of the great classics of English historical writing, is now being reissued.

A challenging and difficult read, with character names among the Franks, the Byzantines, rynciman Armenians, and the Arabs among many others that may seem to repeat and confuse, and many locations largely unknown to the modern western reader. Refresh and try again. The series is at its strongest in its blow by blow account of the first crusade which makes up the whole of the first volume.

Red Urchin rated it it was amazing Jun 09, Perhaps his prose can dip occasionally into exaggeration, and he is a bit Franco-centric in his narrative – but damn, is it fun to read. Over historria I have drifted further away from this book and wouldn’t recommend it.
Runciman’s choices are reasonable.
