Interconnections, Second Edition is about what goes on inside the boxes that move data around the Internet. These boxes are variously called bridges, routers, switches, and hubs. protocols exist, and it is hard to get information about them. J. Shoch, “Internetwork Naming, Addressing, and Routing,”. She is also famous for inventing the spanning tree protocol, on which today switches work in almost all major networks. The book contains extensive coverage of such topics as: But it is solidly grounded in real-life experience — Perlman has spent years designing and implementing network protocols and algorithms most notably the spanning tree algorithm used in most bridges and uses that experience to provide practical illustrations of the theory.
No, you will enjoy unlimited free shipping whenever you meet the above order value threshold. This book won’t tell you which buttons interconnnections push to set up a particular switch or router, but it will help you understand how any piece of intercinnections equipment or software actually works, which is a huge help with troubleshooting. If You’re an Educator Request a copy Additional order info. Is That the Question? Her book no doubt should be one of the best in the industry to understand this technology, and so it is. My first reading of this was difficult – as someone who was new to the protocols and mechanism it discusses, it was “one page forward, three pages back”, for many pages – but each page builds only upon information that’s been provided earlier, so it’s just a matter of re-reading that earlier part until the concept makes sense.

However, I’ll make an exception for books like this one, where a personal xnd subtly emerges from beneath the expected diagrams of packet layouts. Pesonally, I like that style, but not all do.
Perlman describes all of the major networking algorithms and protocols in use 2dn in clear and concise terms, while exploring the engineering bridgees that the different approaches represent.

And there are five chapters on routing, covering general routing concepts distance vector and link state algorithms, link costs and types of serviceimplementation algorithms for fast packet forwardingand specific routing protocols from RIP to BGPas well as the more specialised topics of WAN multicast and “sabotage-proof routing”. She is also co-author of Network Security: Books by Radia Perlman. The bulk of Interconnections may be too detailed for most network administrators or programmers, but those without an interest in the theory may want to track down a copy just for the last two chapters.
My only critique of “Interconnections” is that the terminology is outdated, which makes it hard to map some of the concepts to the networking gear that’s currently in use. Carey rated it liked it Oct 07, To ask other readers questions about Interconnectionsplease sign up.
