Remnick, who is editor of the New Yorker, is a writer to watch, and he and the greatest sports figure of the century are an excellent match. I admire his staunch commitment to an anti-draft stance, even though it cost him the prime years of his career. This is a great book for anyone interested in these titans – for anyone interested in Patterson, Liston and Ali – for anyone interested in the history of legends.
If I came out of the book with a negative impression of Ali, my opinion of boxing became even bleaker. In Ali we see the frailty even of a man whose job it was to be the most fearsome figure on the globe. King of the World: At least he came to regret shunning Malcolm at the end of his life. Only a brief period in time is covered – but it’s an in-depth look at that time kingg the people and the places that made up boxing and some of the world outside boxing.
